About us

past

Compass Church was founded in 1969 as a church in the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA) denomination and holds a great legacy as a significant church in Columbia, Missouri. We are still associated with the EFCA and we have benefited from those supportive relationships. We started as a Bible-believing church and that remains at the heart of our ministry. We also started as a church that wants to be engaged in the world for the good of our community. That outward focus beyond our own lives was and is a large part of our church identity.

PRESENT

Compass’ vision and values flow out of the Gospel. We want to create space for all people to discover Christ and find their place in His story through a gospel movement and whole-hearted family. Indeed, “family” is a great description of life at Compass. It’s not just “Midwest nice” on Sunday mornings. The congregation feels like a home—like a friendly, caring family every day of the week—and people are welcome anytime. You can easily fit in at Compass.

Our worship is a blend of contemporary and classic worshipful music, just like our family is a blend of different people with unique interests and life stories. We like to start our Sunday mornings with classes for all ages where we can connect with our peers in a warm, gentle, even joyful way. We like to hang around after the service to connect with coffee and conversation.

We focus on the life-changing realities of Christ’s grace that creates a freedom that enhances love and community, an identity that never eludes you or crushes you, and a hope that strengthens you to face anything, even suffering or death, with poise and confidence. Such growth is supported by the unwavering unity of a church family that loves who and what Jesus loves.

FUTURE

Since the fall of 2024, we have been purposefully walking through a season of growth with the guidance of an Interim Lead Pastor. Our family commitments and love for the Bible have never changed. Yet, like anyone who is actively engaged in life, we intentionally chose to stretch ourselves like we’ve not been stretched in years.

You would be excited about what’s happening at Compass—in leadership, community, assurance, and dreaming about God’s vision. We are passionate about helping people discover Jesus and find their place in His gospel story now. As well, we are already seeing our future—and we can see you in our future, right along with us, no matter where you are on your journey.
